Seller: mostlyvintage-french (986) 100%, Location: Baudreville, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 113417227168 Description A Carved ‘Bugbear’ Coconut Flask with amazing historical/Colonial detail circa 1830 Bugbear’ coconut flasks were often carved by sailors on long sea voyages who had visited the Tropics and collected the ‘green’ nuts. Easier to carve whilst still young and fresh ‘bugbears’ have been collected originating from Mexico, South and North America, the French Polynesian Islands and Europe. French prisoners of war would carve them with a depiction of the Emperor Napoleon. This example is carved with pastoral Spanish? colonial scenes, possibly with slavery reference. It was likely once used as a shot flask for a gun and would once have had a bone stopper. It has two empty sockets which originally held bone eyes. It has a great patina and comes with an ormolu stand. There is a faint hairline which is very difficult to see and we notice an area of wear or maybe repair (last picture) but again this is difficult to spot. 8.5 inches high with stand. Please be aware that our items are mostly vintage or antique and are rarely in new or perfect condition. They may show signs of patination, fading or wear. If you are looking for items in pristine condition, then unfortunately our items may not be for you.
